The Victorian Forest Alliance has developed a sophisticated interactive online mapping tool, that allows users to delve into the unique qualities of Victoria’s forests. It can give us a better understanding of how to protect and restore each and every forest. We can more effectively plan and carry out citizen science surveys, develop campaign activities, and challenge government forest programs to do better.

We can view where threatened species have been recorded across the state, and show this on a species by species basis. It can help us to predict where there is habitat for particular species of flora and fauna. The mapping system can be used to explore the history of bushfires, planned burns, and logging in any forest location. We can locate old growth forest and mature forests. We can find forest areas that have neither been logged, nor burnt, in living memory. We can see where the Victorian government aims to carry out planned burns and clear fire breaks over the next three years, and campaign more effectively to halt those plans. Through use of satellite imagery it may also be possible to view how different forest areas are recovering from logging and fire.
Based on GIS data from DataVic, combined with satellite imagery, the VFA Forest Mapping Tool was conceived and developed by the FireSmart Forests committee of the Victorian Forest Alliance, who have worked with Taylors, a digital mapping consultancy. The most relevant data from Victorian government databases and citizen science survey results has been combined to create a mapping system that is custom-made for forest activists and local communities. The VFA Forest Mapping Tool can be developed and enhanced in response to new campaign priorities We will also be able to upload new data from citizen scientists as their forest survey work expands in the future.
