VFA Webinar Series with Dr. Steve Phillips - 12 June 2025

About the webinar

The recent aerial shooting of koalas in the Budj Bim NP shocked the world, and rightly so, it should not have happened at all. This presentation examines the spin and pseudo-science currently informing koala management in this instance, and in Victoria generally. Topics to be covered include what science says about the impacts of fire on koalas generally, the management of koalas in blue gum plantations, koala genetics and disease, the need for some new koala management paradigms and what the future of Victorian koalas could look like with a visionary and well-planned Koala Management Strategy.

About the speaker

Dr. Stephen Phillips is an internationally recognised specialist koala ecologist with more than 45 years of experience in koala conservation and management. Amongst other contributions he is a former member of the NSW Koala Recovery Team and the Commonwealth Government’s expert working group on koala distribution and abundance. He has worked throughout the range of koalas in eastern Australia,  including the Strzelecki Ranges and southwest of Victoria.
